Since the dark ages, mental health treatment has evolved from inhumane practices—like chaining individuals with mental illness to walls in darkness—to more modern approaches. Yet, in U.S. emergency rooms today, young people in emotional crisis are still effectively held hostage in the name of psychiatric care. We remain tethered to an outdated biomedical model of mental health. Ironically, the current mental health crisis—immense in scope—offers a glimmer of hope: it is forcing society to wake up. As we witness the collapse of our mental healthcare system, especially in its failure to support youth and everyday people, we are finally beginning to acknowledge the urgent need for change. Dr. Christine Silverstein demonstrates how to become empowered and resilient through compelling examples from her personal life and clinical practice as a Hypno-Coach. She is also a behavioral health registered nurse.
