Title: The Letters We Never Sent

Level: Intermediate (B1-B2)

Story:

Margot Bellerose never planned to return to Paris, nor did she expect to find Julien Moreau exactly where she had left him—among the books, in the quiet warmth of the same bookshop they had once called theirs. Six years ago, she walked away, leaving only a letter behind, filled with words she had never dared to say out loud. Now, standing in front of him once again, she realizes that time has not erased what they were. But when she learns that Julien never read her letter, Margot is faced with a question she never anticipated—if he already knew what it said, was there still a chance to rewrite their ending? As the past and present collide, Margot must decide: run again, or finally stay and turn the page.

Vocabulary:

  1. Unwavering – steady, not changing or hesitating.
  2. Unspoken – something felt but never said aloud.
  3. Hesitation – a pause before making a decision.
  4. Collide – to come together forcefully, often unexpectedly.
  5. Linger – to stay longer than expected, to not fade away completely.

Grammar Focus:

  • Past Perfect Tense:
  • “She had convinced herself that leaving was the right choice.”
  • Describes an action completed before another past event.
  • Modal Verbs for Speculation & Regret:
  • “If she had stayed, would they have found a way?”
  • Expresses uncertainty about a past event.
  • Conditional Sentences (Type 3):
  • “If he had opened the letter, would it have changed anything?”
  • Talks about a hypothetical past event that didn’t happen.
