Virginie Girod raconte la jeunesse de Joseph Staline (1878-1953), l'une des figures les plus marquantes du XXe siècle. Joseph Staline, fils de cordonnier, naît dans la seconde partie du XIXe siècle, à Gori. Dans cette ville située dans l'actuelle Géorgie, alors intégrée à l'empire russe, nombreux sont ceux qui rejettent l'autorité du tsar. Etudiant brillant, le jeune Staline intègre le combat contre l'oppression et la révolution marxiste. Evoluant dans le milieu du banditisme, il prend part à la révolution de 1905 et rencontre Lénine, puis Trotski. En 1917, à la chute du tsar, Staline intègre le premier gouvernement marxiste au monde, qu'il façonnera bientôt à sa brutale image.
