Genèse 12 commence par l'appel de Dieu à Abram, lui promettant de faire de lui une grande nation. Abram obéit et part pour Canaan, mais une famine l’oblige à se rendre en Égypte. Après un incident avec Pharaon, il revient à Canaan. Genèse 13 décrit la séparation d’Abram et Lot, chacun choisissant sa propre terre. Dans Genèse 14, Abram sauve Lot des mains d'un roi en guerre et rencontre Melchisédek, roi de Salem et prêtre du Dieu Très-Haut.
