Cobb to Raise Water, Sewer Rates

Cobb County will increase water and sewer rates annually for the next five years, following a 4-1 commission vote, with JoAnn Birrell dissenting. The average residential customer, using 5,000 gallons monthly, will see a $1.90 increase next year. Rate hikes start April 1, 2025, and continue each January through 2029, to cover rising costs and major wastewater projects. Chairwoman Lisa Cupid described the move as proactive, preventing larger future hikes. Historically, the county has adjusted water rates and revenue transfers to the general fund, with a plan to reduce the transfer rate from 10% to 5%. Last year, 6% of water revenues were transferred, and rates rose 7.5%. This year, the transfer is 5%. Birrell criticized the practice of transferring funds while raising rates, arguing against increases when funds are diverted to the general fund.
