About this episode

S2E4. BALANCING TRADITION AND MODERNITY WITH HANEEN

HANEEN IS A PALESTINIAN TATREEZ ARTIST AND NURSE BASED IN VIRGINIA WHO USES TATREEZ AS A WAY TO BLEND CULTURE & RESISTANCE IN ORDER TO CREATE A COMMUNITY WHEREVER SHE GOES (@HANUNA123). Introduced to the craft later and then fitting it into her family's traditions, Haneen balances tradition and modernity in her art. She emphasizes the timeless nature of tatreez and always having her work with her as a source of focus and connection.

Building community through tatreez has come up more than once for her, from thinking about her move from Michigan to Virginia to her spontaneous decision to join the Tatreez Retreat in 2023. Haneen reflects on the valuable life lessons tatreez has taught her, her dedication to preserving and modernizing Palestinian heritage, and the powerful role of tatreez in her life.

You’ll hear about:

>> 1:15: Haneen and her family’s connection to Palestine

>> 3:01: Getting introduced to tatreez

>> 4:52: Haneen’s family reaction to her tatreez practice

>> 8:58: Balancing tradition and modernity through meaning in tatreez

>> 15:15: Gifting meaningful tatreez pieces

>> 16:35: The tatreez that Haneen will keep for herself

>> 18:49: Never a wrong place to pull out your tatreez
