In today’s episode, you will learn a series of vocabulary words that are connected to a specific topic. This lesson will help you improve your ability to speak English fluently about a specific topic. It will also help you feel more confident in your English abilities.

5 Vocabulary Words Related to the topic

  1. Perpetrator (noun): A person who commits a crime or wrongdoing. 
    • Example sentences: 
      1. The police are still searching for the perpetrator of the robbery.
      2. Witnesses were unable to identify the perpetrator of the hit-and-run accident.
      3. The perpetrator was caught on surveillance camera fleeing the scene of the crime.
  2. Alibi (noun): A claim or piece of evidence that one was elsewhere when an alleged act took place, typically used to defend oneself in a criminal trial.
    • Example sentences: 
      1. The suspect provided a solid alibi, proving he was out of town during the time of the crime.
      2. Her alibi fell apart when witnesses testified seeing her at the scene of the crime.
      3. The defense attorney presented multiple alibis to support her client's innocence.
  3. Conspiracy (noun):
    • Definition: A secret plan by a group of people to do something unlawful or harmful.
    • Example sentences: 
      1. The gang members were arrested for conspiracy to commit a series of bank robberies.
      2. The conspiracy unraveled when one of the members turned informant.
      3. The politician was accused of being involved in a conspiracy to rig the election.
  4. Motive (noun): A reason for doing something, especially one that is hidden or not obvious.
    • Example sentences:

      2. Without a clear motive, the jury struggled to reach a verdict.
      3. Greed was believed to be the motive behind the embezzlement scheme.
  5. Accomplice (noun): A person who helps another commit a crime.
    • Example sentences:

      2. She was charged as an accomplice after providing false alibis for her partner in crime.
      3. The police offered a plea deal in exchange for information leading to the capture of the accomplice.

Unraveling the truth behind a crime often involves piecing together a complex puzzle. Investigators work tirelessly to identify the perpetrator. Then, they search for accomplices, those who aided or abetted the crime in some way. Determining the motive, is the next crucial part. Was it a crime of passion, a desperate act for financial gain, or perhaps part of a larger conspiracy involving multiple people? In the end, a suspect's alibi can be a powerful piece of evidence, either solidifying their innocence or casting further doubt.
