Dr. Michelle May is a former family physician, recovered yo-yo dieter, founder of Am I Hungry? Mindful Eating Programs and Training, and author of the Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat book series that teaches mindful eating to resolve mindless and emotional eating and senseless yo-yo dieting.
She has trained over 800 health professionals to offer mindful eating programs. She is an Associate Professor at Arizona State University and taught a masterclass on mindful eating for the Calm App.
Dr. May is the co-author of an article reviewing the scientific evidence for why healthcare should shift to a weight-neutral approach that presents the evidence and framework for weight‐inclusive patient care practices.
During our conversation, she discusses what it means to have a non-diet, weight-inclusive, and mindfulness-based approach to health and wellness. She talks about eating from the inside out by paying attention to hunger, fullness, and feedback from our bodies.
She discusses how diets can lead to disordered eating, weight stigma, weight cycling, and other issues that do not lead to better health. She also talks about how people don't have to weigh one specific narrow range to be healthy, beautiful, and acceptable.
