"My sister’s graduation is next week." 2. Diploma: A certificate you get when you finish school. "He received his diploma after four years of study." 3. Ceremony: A special event to celebrate something. "The graduation ceremony will start at 10 AM." Other common types of ceremonies: wedding and funeral 4. Graduate: A person who has finished school. "She is a college graduate." She graduated from college.” The verb is pronounced just a little differently. 5. Cap: A hat worn during graduation. "Everyone wore a black cap at the ceremony." 6. Gown: A long robe worn during graduation. "The graduates wore blue gowns." 7. Commencement: Another word for graduation ceremony. "The commencement starts at seven and will be held in the gym." 8. Speech: Talking to a group of people. "The principal gave a commencement speech at graduation." 9. Degree: A title you get when you finish college. "He earned a degree in biology." Also a way to measure temperature. “It is forty-four degrees outside.” 10. Valedictorian: The student with the highest grades in the graduating class. "The valedictorian gave a speech.”
