Fabric of Folklore
About this episode

What do you know about the evil Baba Yaga, the most famous of the Russian fairy tales? Baba Yaga is one of the complex characters, and therefore one of the most fun and fascinating to discuss. In episode 7 of Fairy Tale Flip, Donna Lee Fields and Vanessa Y Rogers discuss the deeper meaning of this ambiguous child-eating witch who lives in a hut with chicken legs. We discuss the significances of her hut lit with skull lanterns deep in the forest. We explore the hidden meanings of the forest, Baba Yaga's frightening physical characteristics of iron teeth and long nose. We delve into other mythological figures, goddesses and trickster characters that share similarities with Baba Yaga. We look at the symbolism of death and rebirth, agism, finding one's own hero's journey. Its such a great episode!
