Student protests over Israel's genocidal war on Gaza are spreading across the United States and around the world. Students at Columbia University in New York setup a protest encampment last week on the New York campus. In response, the university's President, Nemat "Minouche" Shafik, called in the New York Police Department and arrested several student organizers. These students were then banned from campus and may face expulsion.
If the goal was to quickly end the protest, this completely backfired on the university administration. Thousands of students, joined by faculty and staff from across the university, re-established the protest camp almost immediately. Other universities around the United States have seen solidarity camps erected and administration buildings occupied. Now, students around the world are joining the movement.
Michael Arria and I spoke to one of the student organizers from Columbia who was arrested and banned from campus. Maryam Iqbal spoke to us on Tuesday.
