Nel 1989 Li Lu è uno dei leader delle proteste studentesche: dopo l’intervento dei militari scappa e ottiene asilo politico negli Stati Uniti. Dopo il primo aiuto da parte di stelle di Hollywood, incontra un magnate, apre una sua azienda e diventa miliardario. La sua ascesa, sia come rivoltoso, sia come miliardario, è misteriosa e sospetta, e Li sarà anche l’unico dei suoi vecchi compagni di lotta in Cina a poter tornare a Pechino dopo aver partecipato alle proteste del 1989.
