#456: Take Care of Maya | Part 1

Real Crime Profile / Wondery
About this episode

What would you do if you rushed your young seriously ill child to the emergency room only to have the hospital not believe that she was in tremendous pain and actually accuse you of medial child abuse? What if that was only the beginning of a nightmare for your family, as the hospital took custody of your child and held her there against your will for three months, denying you contact? That is what happened to Beate and Jack Kowalski when they took their 10 year old daughter Maya to Johns Hopkins All Children’s hospital. Maya had been recovering from an illness called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, when she suddenly relapsed and was forced to seek care from doctors not familiar with her condition, nor its unconventional treatment. Join us as we discuss this important case within the framework of the Netflix documentary “Take Care of Maya” which chronicles the horrific story of a medical system gone out of control and the trauma it inflicted on one family.
