Let’s consider 3 illustrated sentence examples for the word FASHIONABLE. Then later in the video we will see the difference between FASHIONABLE and STYLISH. We will also learn a number of synonyms, and finally a group of common collocations to help with your fluency in English.

Slide 4:
The picture shows Paris Jackson wearing ripped jeans and another picture showing the outside of the “Let It Rock” fashion boutique in London.

Sentence example: Ripped jeans started to become fashionable during the 1970s, when designer Vivienne Westwood and Malcom McLaren (Sex Pistols band manager) opened a London store named Let It Rock, which sold clothes that symbolized anger and non-conformity.

Slide 5:
Next, we see a picture of a street in London’s Camden Town district.

Sentence example: During the 1970s, Camden Town started to become a very fashionable part of London, famous for its street markets, fashion boutiques and music gigs.

So FASHIONABLE can be used to not only describe clothing, but a certain part of a city.

Thirdly, we see a street scene in Seoul, South Korea.

Sentence example: Myeong-dong is the fashion mecca of Seoul, South Korea, where celebrities, artists and fashionable people gather.

Fashionable People
Definition: people who are stylish, elegant in manners and dress

Fashionable vs Stylish
Style is timeless, while fashion is time-constrained.
Someone who is fashionable follows closely the latest fashion trends and wears designer clothing which will eventually ‘go out of style’.
Someone who is stylish may or may not follow fashion trends, but they always stay true to their own individual beauty or taste, creating their own ‘look’ which can be timeless.
