AVANT-GARDE: Definition

noun: artists, writers, musicians, etc. whose ideas, methods and techniques are experimental, unorthodox, or in advance of what is generally accepted

adjective: relating to an innovative group, especially in the arts

The French term avant-guard means vanguard in English, in other words, the part of an army that goes in advance or goes ahead of the main body of soldiers

Note: In English, avant-garde us usually hyphenated.

Sentence: Andy Warhol is recognized as the leader of avant-garde art in America during the late 1960s. His interests included painting, sculpture, conceptual art, silkscreen printing, and film-making.

Sentence: Here is a scene from a performance called “Cut Piece”, in which avant-garde artist Yoko Ono allowed randomly selected members of the audience to cut a piece of her clothes with scissors to take home.

Sentence: The avant-garde is often controversial due to its radical nature, and because it threatens existing ideas, processes and forms, challenging the status quo.
