The interior life is where the affections are directed, and intimacy with Jesus rises or falls. Intimacy is knowing and being known. Therefore, intimacy with God is cultivated by growing in our understanding of who Jesus is and what He is like. There is a cry for intimacy in every heart. Many attempt to answer that cry through various means, but it is only answered by growing deeper in God. Growing in intimacy doesn’t happen automatically. Believers must participate in the necessary activities that foster the inner flame of love. This is a rare thing. God will not make us love Him, but He will help us by His Spirit as we diligently seek it (Prov. 2:4, 5). As we grow the interior life, believers soon discover its incredible value and the need to guard it with careful attentiveness.
