About this episode

Il incarne l’engagement catholique en politique, sicilien d’origine, tertiaire dominicain et franciscain, Giorgio La Pira (1904-1977) fut maire de Florence durant trois mandats, de 1951 à 1965. Fervent défenseur d’un catholicisme social, il fonde « la messe des pauvres » dans sa ville, fait ériger des logements sociaux et mène un inlassable combat pour la paix, multipliant les échanges avec les chefs d’États à travers le monde, dont Nasser. Traité de « bolchevik de l'Évangile » de son vivant par ses opposants, surnommé « le saint maire » par les Florentins à sa mort, il restera un homme du dialogue, désireux de mettre les pauvres « au centre ». À Florence, l’émission partira à la découverte de cette figure de la démocratie chrétienne italienne, à travers son œuvre, et l’héritage qu’il a laissé. Pour en parler, David Milliat reçoit Bruna Bagnato, historienne et professeure d’histoire des relations internationales à la faculté de sciences politiques de Florence.
