Carnivore
Meaning: An organism that eats other animals for food

  1. Sentence 1: The piraña is a carnivorous fish found in the Amazon River. 
  2. Sentence 2: Pitcher plants and venus fly traps are carnivorous plants that eat bugs and other small animals.
  3. Sentence 3: Humans are not considered carnivores because they eat plants and other animals.

Predator
Meaning: Living by seizing or taking prey; a person that ruthlessly exploits others

  1. Sentence 1: When swimming in the ocean, many are afraid because sharks are natural predators in them.
  2. Sentence 2: In business, he behaves in a predacious manner and is willing to do anything to make money.
  3. Sentence 3: The lion is a predator for the gazelle.


TODAY'S ENGLISH EXPRESSIONS

Can't teach an old dog new tricks
Meaning: If a person is used to something a particular way, it is difficult for them to change.

  1. Sentence 1: Bill is so stubborn and obstinate. I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
  2. Sentence 2: My mother refuses to learn how to use Netflix because she is adamant that you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
  3. Sentence 3: Although you can't teach an old dog new tricks, you can help them learn by building on their already formed habits.


The elephant in the room
Meaning: An obvious problem that is being ignored

  1. Sentence 1: There was a lot of tension after the meeting because they refused to acknowledge the elephant in the room.
  2. Sentence 2: Paul, why are you avoiding the elephant in the room?
  3. Sentence 3: Financing schools has become a problem about equal to having an elephant in the living room. It’s so big you just can’t ignore it.
