Dans son dernier ouvrage Fabrice Balanche, maître de conférences en géographie à l’Université Lyon II et spécialiste du Moyen Orient revient sur son terrain d’études : Syrie et Liban. 


Deux États sous influence étrangère, fragmentés par des antagonismes ethniques, religieux et tribaux qui semblent irréductibles. Au-delà de la géopolitique internationale et du conflit israélo-arabe, les causes de leurs faillites respectives sont aussi à rechercher dans le poids du système communautaire. Le communautarisme constitue la dimension cachée des rapports sociaux, économiques et politiques au Proche-Orient. 


Par ailleurs, l’héritage idéologique d’Edward Saïd influence toujours la recherche académique, conduisant à des explications tronquées à l’égard des conflits qui ensanglantent la région et dont nous subissons le retour de flamme en Europe. Cet ouvrage a donc pour but d’apporter des clés de compréhension réalistes sur la base de trois décennies de recherches de terrain, y compris au cœur des conflits, avec comme seul principe de garder les yeux grands ouverts sur le réel et de « ni rire, ni pleurer, ni haïr, mais comprendre » (Spinoza).
