About this episode

For World AIDS Day 2022, the Out Takes team wanted to highlight two of the fantastic films and interviews from our archives that acknowledge the importance of representation and seeing our stories on the big and small screen in relation to the impact of HIV/AIDS on the LGBTIQ+ community.

First up, we presented an encore of Daniel’s interview with director David Weissman who’s award winning documentary WE WERE HERE recalled the early years of the HIV/AIDS crisis in San Francisco. WE WERE HERE is a powerful testament to our collective history and an affirmation of our shared humanity. Daniel spoke in depth with David Weissman about the power of WE WERE HERE and why it continues to maintain its resonance after its premiere at Sundance in 2011. Then we revisited our interview with Yen Tan whose film 1985 was one of the best films of 2019 which examined the early AIDS crisis through a deeply personal and heartbreaking family drama set in Texas in 1985.
