As we witness the human tragedy taking place in Aleppo, Syria, we must remember some profound ayat from Surat Al-Ana’am, Nouman Ali Khan points out. Allah continuously rescues us from calamity, which is the human race’s default state, but despite that, people continue to disbelieve, triggering Allah’s punishment. One of the manifestations of this punishment is aggression that flares up amongst people. But this hate and resentment does not come from a vacuum. It is the by-product of the deeply flawed sectarian nature of religious education in our societies. What is happening now should be a wakeup call for us to plant a seed, to make a long-term investment in the minds of our children, to take in orphans and reintroduce the legacy of the ansar.
