The Magic Conch Shell!

KIDS STORIES
About this episode

Aloha! Today we have the privilege of traveling to one of the most beautiful places in the world-Hawaii! Hawaii is an ancient place with wonderful ancient stories of how the islands came into being, with its landscape being forged by the mighty gods themselves. The four main gods (Akua) are Ku, Kane, Lono, and Kanaloa. Then there are many lesser gods (kupua), each associated with certain professions (theres a god for each job!)

Our gorgeous story today is about an item that is very important in Hawaiian tradition, the Conch shell! I have read that in Hawaii it is called a Pu shell and there are two main kinds-I hope my Hawaiin friends can confirm this for me? In ancient times, the Pu was sometimes used to accompany chants, and most often used to announce the beginning of a ceremony. Today the shell is used to announce the opening of the Hawaii State Legislature, presentation of the royal court at festivals and for traditional ceremonies. The PU is also a popular commencement tool at weddings and luaus, and also have been used to honor royalty and famous people. I hope I get there to hear it for myself someday! We hope you enjoy today's story about King Kiha and the Magic Conch Shell!
