When a king asks his three daughters how much they love him, his youngest daughter gives him an answer that upsets him so much that he throws her out of the house where she must fend for herself. To disguise her fine clothes and beautiful hair, she braids a cap and a robe out of rushes, then she takes a job as a scullery maid at a grand castle, where the young prince takes a liking to her, and on their wedding day, she finds a way to reconcile with her father, the king.
