Dennis Prager | Choosing to Be Happy in ...

KAST MEDIA
About this episode

Today I discuss with Dennis about how there are millions of people drinking the kool aid of a message imparted by proverbial pop culture, in the secular media, which has caused millions of people to live lives of quiet desperation. There is a narrative today that pain and hardship should be avoided and people should be focusing all their energies and efforts on immediate happiness. The Declaration of Independence states that men have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Dennis states happiness must be pursued and poses the question, “What good thing in life doesn’t have to be pursued?” You don’t have to pursue video games, or sleeping in late every day. “We are as happy as we decide to be” (Abraham Lincoln). You become the person like whom you act. If you act happy, and do happy things, you will become happier. “Unhappy people don’t want to be around unhappy people. That’s the joke! ‘You should want to be around me, but I would not want to be around me.’ It’s so selfish that it’s angering actually” (12:12). Young people crave older people to give them wisdom, and the notion that young people only want to hear from other young people is false. The moment you say anything, one sentence, in order to be liked, you are no longer authentic. You must answer to no one, but God, if you believe in him. Your children should respect you, but they don’t have to like you. Never do anything just to get them to like you. Your biggest struggle in life is not with America, or your parents, but with you and your own nature. The sickness of our time is people walking around seeking to blame outsiders for their sadness, or misery, or failure. In secular education you learn that your biggest problem is society and America. In religious education your biggest problem is you.
