About this episode
There was devastation for Spain last night as they lost an incredible game to Italy on penalties in the first Euro 2020 semi-final. But the performance of Barcelona’s brilliant young midfielder Pedri shows that the future is bright for Spanish football. But what about the 18-year-old’s club side? You don’t need reminding that the last time Liverpool came across Barcelona was back on May 7, 2019 when Jurgen Klopp’s team produced one of the greatest comebacks of all time. That 4-0 defeat shook Barca to their core. But as we’ll learn on this special podcast, as seismic as that result was, the club’s problems had set in long before then, and has certainly accelerated since. Samuel Marsden reports on Barcelona for ESPN and Diario Sport, and Paul Wheelock picked up the phone to him for the first time since before the Miracle of Anfield to find out exactly how bad things have gotten at Camp Nou. Sam talks about Lionel Messi, and whether Barca will be able to sign the world’s greatest player to another contract or be forced to let him leave on a free; whether the reports are true that they would really accept a £120m loss on Philippe Coutinho; their decision to sell Luis Suarez to Atletico Madrid last summer, and why Gini Wijnaldum didn’t become the latest Liverpool player to join Barcelona this summer. And given the stark financial situation at the club, will they be able to keep hold of Pedri, who has been linked with Liverpool. Sam answers that, and gives a great insight into many more subjects we hope you find interesting.
