159: Brooke Romney: Modern Manners for T...

PodcastOne
About this episode

Brooke Romney is a writer, speaker, and connector. She has been published in The Washington Post, The Deseret News, and a host of other online publications where her pieces have been read millions of times. Brooke comes from girly roots but has morphed into an outdoor exploring, dirt loving mom of 4 boys (ages 9-18) and couldn't be happier about it. She is married to a man who keeps her on her toes but loves unconditionally, even when she leaves all the cupboards open and lights on.

In October 2020, she published her first book, I Like Me Anyway: Embracing Imperfection, Connection, and Christ, and in October of 2021, she published her second book, 52 Modern Manners for Today's Teens, which is what we're going to talk all about today! This Modern Manners for Teens guide has helped teenagers adopt fresh perspectives and doable strategies for living a more successful and connected life in a really simple way.

Today we're covering tons of teen topics - everything from how to lovingly correct a teen, to how to teach social media etiquette, and some of the ways we can raise our kids to be kind, thoughtful, resilient, and confident.

Time Stamps:

[01:20] - Brooke Romney shares the evolution of her idea to write a book focused on teens.

[03:50] - How can parents lovingly correct teens?

[05:45] - You don’t need to build your kids. Focus on helping the kids build themselves.

[08:16] - Corrine and Brooke discuss how to encourage kids through school transitions, like starting middle school.

[09:37] - Brooke talks about her approach to teens and technology.

[12:37] - What tactics does Brooke suggest for rules with technology?

[15:15] - At some point, you do need to give freedom to your child inside your home to help their transition into the real world.

[17:32] - How do kids influence each other in terms of using technology?

[19:11] - What helps kids choose better friends?

[21:05] - Brooke shares her thoughts about not being too consumed in your kid’s friend relationships.

[22:36] - Teach your child how to be a friend.

[24:56] - What are Brooke’s tips on developing teen manners when at other people’s homes?

[26:33] - When kids have manners, they experience a positive feedback loop that boosts their confidence.

[28:44] - Corrine and Brooke talk about their thoughts on “doing your part” and showing up for others.

[30:54] - How can parents manage kids who don’t want to follow rules?

[32:05] - Successful parenting is not defined by your kid’s outcomes. Brooke explains what this means.

[34:56] - We don’t know the effects of our parenting until much later down the road.

[35:37] - Where are the moments you can teach your kids to self-advocate?

[38:23] - It’s never too late.

[41:09] - Thank you so much Brooke for your time!
