On the first day of Black History Month, the NFL was rocked by allegations contained in a class-action lawsuit by Brian Flores, former head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Flores outlined alleged proof that exposes the racist hiring policies of the NFL around the hiring and firing of Black people. None of the allegations have been tested in court, but part of the proof stems from a text message from another coach along with a long and damning history of how the league has treated Black players and coaches. It may be difficult to prove these kind of allegations but, whatever happens, Flores is taking this step knowing that it will likely be a career-limiting — or even, sacrificing — manoeuvre.
