Antes de la Revolución Francesa, bañarse no era un hábito, sino al contrario, se llegó a considerar peligroso por la posibilidad de contraer más enfermedades. La mayoría de la gente se bañaba en seco. A pesar todos los prejuicios, a finales del siglo XVIII se impuso el hábito de lavarse regularmente con agua.
