Imagine being 10 years old, living a typical suburban life. You love horse riding and spending time with your friends. Everything feels normal for a girl from Bay Village. As a latchkey kid, you always get home before your brother and call your mom to let her know you’re safe. This is your daily routine. One day, the phone rings. You answer, expecting your mom, but instead, a man says he works with her and wants your help picking out a gift for her recent promotion. Since you’ve been arguing with your mom, you think this is a nice idea and agree to meet him on Friday, October 27, 1989. He asks you to keep it a secret, but you tell your brother and a friend. You don’t realize it yet, but you’ve just set up your own kidnapping and murder.
This is what happened to 10-year-old Amy Mihaljevic, a fifth-grader at Bay Village Middle School, a suburb about 10 miles west of Cleveland. Bay Village sits on the Lake Erie shoreline, with a median income just over $100,000 and average home prices near $ 300,000.
That wraps up part one of my 30-year conversation with the Chief of Bay Village Police. Part two of my interview with Chief Spaetzel will be out next week. Thank you again for listening.
