The Sleepover Club: What Are Sad Girls M...

THE POLYESTER PODCAST
About this episode

The modern sad girl, she is all of us, but in reality, she is none of us; just another impossible to achieve representation of what a woman's feelings should look like. So why are we still so obsessed with depictions of feminine woe? In this episode, Olivia and Ione discuss the construction of the sad girl; from the cultural artefacts we all grew up obsessing over, to the way they've permeated modern stereotypes, and how these characters have us all aspiring to become the perfect gorgeous, tragic, sad girl. While the manic pixie dream girl may be long out of cinematic fashion, her impact still remains. So how can we remove ourselves from patriarchal framings of our emotions? And moreover, where do these stereotypes stop, and our real feelings begin? Is it ever possible to escape the performativity of feminised sadness, or should we just embrace it? We'll be discussing all this and much more.

This week, the one and only Tavi Gevinson is on hand recommending three things to get you through the week! All in aide of the ROOKIE PRINT SALE! Which we are very excited about. Shop the sale, with all proceeds to Movement Voter Project, from Wednesday this week at rookieprintsale.com.
