About this episode

Russell & Robert meet legendary fashion writer Tim Blanks, Editor-at-large of Business Of Fashion and a passionate art fan/collector. We discuss growing up in New Zealand, hanging out in the late 70s with artist collective General Idea in New York, meeting Andy Warhol in Toronto, the influence of David Bowie, his love of The Photographer’s Gallery, collecting photography including Juergen Teller and a classic Horst photograph of Marlene Dietrich. We learn of his admiration for a new generation such as photographer Jack Davison, stylist Ib Kamara and designer Craig Green plus we hear his perspective on the future of art and fashion worlds after the Covid-19 pandemic.


We reflect on successful art & fashion collaborations including Raf Simons & Sterling Ruby, Maria Grazia Chiuri & Judy Chicago and Kim Jones who has worked with artists throughout his career from KAWS to Raymond Pettibon to Jake & Dinos Chapman. We discuss his favourite contemporary artists including Lisa Brice, Jordan Casteel, Gregory Halpern, Trisha Donnelly, Kevin Beasley and AA Bronson, and his longterm friendship with Casey Kaplan, the leading NY gallerist who he’s also collected artworks from. We explore the history of Illustration in fashion from Erte and Yves Saint Laurent to more recent illustrators/artists such as Julie Verhoeven, Mats GustafsonClym Evernden and Howard Tangye. Finally we hear Tim sing a classic Velvet Underground song!
