  1. Fiction 
    • Meaning: literature or a work of art that is invented by the imagination
    • Sentence 1: Dan Brown is a famous writer of fiction.
    • Sentence 2: Many people read works of fiction to escape from everyday life.
    • Sentence 3: Be careful not to believe the fiction that all people are harmful.
  2. Journal 
    • Meaning: a record of experiences, ideas, or reflections
    • Sentence 1: As a student, I journaled everything that happened to me each day.
    • Sentence 2: It is important to journal as a method of reporting when tasked with a large work assignment.
    • Sentence 3: Keeping a journal enhances your writing skills.

  1. Hit the books 
    • Meaning: to study or learn; doing your homework
    • Sentence 1: I have a test tomorrow so I've got to hit the books tonight.
    • Sentence 2: He never went to parties on the weekend and refused to do anything but hit the books.

  2. An open book 
    • Meaning: A description of someone who is easy to understand
    • Sentence 1: She enjoyed conversing with Dale, he was an open book.
    • Sentence 2: I have known Cindy for ten years, but I don't know much about her because she is not an open book.
    • Sentence 3: I am an open book to my close friends, but everyone else sees me as a closed-off person.
