One day at sunset, Neverlissen is supposed to meet his friends Copycata and Mimicfina in the woods, but he wasn't listening when they said to go to the north side, and he ends up on the south side! He falls through a never-ending hole in the ground that drops him on the island of Islay in Scotland. There, his fox hat, Madra Rua, comes alive and helps guide him when he senses danger.
Unfortunately, Neverlissen gets lost in his thoughts and forgets to listen to Madra Rua's warnings. He wanders into a dangerous area, where he gets caught in a hunter's trap that leaves him hanging from a tree! Neverlissen will need to listen to each and every sound if he wants to escape the trap and find Madra Rua again. Will he finally be able to tune into his sense of hearing to get himself out of this mess?
