A railroad replaced Harper's Ferry in the early 19th century. B & O railroad was soon built and first crossed the Potomac in the town of Harpers Ferry in 1839. The railroad was built for transportation to Winchester but was promptly destroyed during the civil war. Several railroad bridges were destroyed by natural disasters and rebuilt. The two standing today date from the 1890s and 1930s. This sound features a close recording of a long freight train chugging by with the occasional squealing of wheels.
